At Mayfair Occupational Health, we provide Safety Critical Medicals to ensure that individuals working in high-risk environments are medically fit to perform their duties safely. These assessments are essential for maintaining workplace safety, supporting compliance, and protecting both employees and employers.
Safety Critical Medicals are designed for individuals whose health and fitness have a direct impact on their own safety and that of others. These assessments follow the standards outlined in the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (UK and Northern Ireland) and the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 (Ireland).
These medicals are crucial for workers in roles where safety risks are elevated and where ill health could result in serious harm. Examples include:
- Construction Site Operatives
- Demolition Workers
- Forklift Drivers
- Maritime Workers
- LGV/HGV Drivers
- General Plant Operators
- Crane Operators
- Mobile Machine Operators
- Scaffolders and Riggers
- Tunnel Boring
- Teams Work-at-Height Operatives
Each Safety Critical Medical includes a comprehensive physical and mental health evaluation:
- Blood pressure pulse, height, weight, and BMI
- Audiometry (hearing test)
- Spirometry (lung function test)
- Urinalysis (glucose, blood, and protein screening)
- Musculoskeletal assessment
- Eye examination (visual acuity, colour vision, peripheral vision)
- Skin assessment
The assessment typically takes around 60 minutes and can be conducted either onsite or at one of our local clinics, depending on what’s most convenient for the employee.
A Fitness Certificate will be issued by one of our Occupational Health Clinicians, usually within 24–48 hours of completing the assessment and associated health questionnaires.
