What Does the Assessment Include?
OEUK and RUK medicals are comprehensive assessments covering all aspects of physical and mental fitness required for safe offshore working. Each medical typically includes:

Types of OEUK & RUK Medical Certificate
There are several categories of OEUK and RUK medical certificate, each designed for different roles, working environments and levels of physical demand. Understanding which certificate applies to your workforce ensures the right assessment is carried out and the correct certification is issued.
OEUK Standard Medical
The full offshore fitness examination for anyone requiring regular access to oil and gas installations, vessels, or remote energy sites. Covers medical history, physical and cardiovascular examination, ECG where indicated, vision, hearing, urinalysis, and medication review. Certificate valid for up to two years.
OEUK + Fit to Train
Everything in the Standard Medical, plus the pre-survival training fitness check — all in one visit. Confirms the individual is medically fit for HUET, sea survival, and firefighting courses. Certificates issued following successful completion of the relevant assessments.
OEUK + Chester Step Test
The full OEUK medical combined with a cardiovascular fitness assessment. The Chester Step Test measures aerobic capacity across up to five stepping stages with heart rate monitoring, producing a predicted VO₂ Max benchmarked against age and sex norms. Ideal where operators require fitness benchmarking alongside the standard medical.
Fitness to Train (Pre-Survival Training)
Required before personnel undertake offshore survival training such as Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET), sea survival, and firefighting courses. This assessment confirms the individual is physically and medically fit to participate in demanding safety training exercises. It is a mandatory requirement prior to completing offshore survival certification.
Chester Step Test (Fitness Assessment)
The Chester Step Test is a submaximal cardiovascular fitness assessment used within the OEUK framework to evaluate aerobic capacity and physical fitness. It involves stepping at increasing rates across up to five stages with heart rate monitored throughout, and is used to determine fitness for physically demanding offshore roles. A predicted VO2 Max is calculated from the results and benchmarked against age and sex specific norms.
RUK Medical
The Renewables UK medical for personnel working on offshore wind, tidal, and renewable energy installations. Follows a similar framework to the OEUK exam — covering medical history, physical and cardiovascular assessment, vision, hearing, and urinalysis. Valid for up to two years. Mayfair Health Group is approved to conduct RUK medicals for individuals and full workforces.
Is an OEUK or RUK Medical a Legal Requirement?
Yes. It is OEUK policy that all personnel working offshore must undergo periodic medical examinations and be certified as medically fit before deployment. This requirement applies to all roles on offshore installations, vessels, and remote energy sites — regardless of the duration or frequency of offshore visits.
RenewableUK (RUK) medicals follow equivalent standards for those working in the offshore renewable energy sector, including wind, wave, and tidal operations.
Failure to hold a valid fitness certificate can result in personnel being denied access to offshore installations, vessel boarding, or remote sites. Certificates must be renewed periodically in line with OEUK and RUK guidance.

Which OEUK Medical Category Does My Workforce Need?
The category of medical required depends on the nature and frequency of offshore access. Category 1 applies to regular offshore workers, while Category 2 may apply to those with limited or occasional offshore exposure. A Fitness to Train medical is required separately before survival training courses.
