Chester Step Test Calculator
Calculate your cardiovascular fitness level instantly using the clinically validated Chester Step Test protocol.
What is the Chester Step Test?
The Chester Step Test is a clinically validated submaximal exercise test used to estimate VO2 Max — the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during exercise. It is widely used in occupational health, sports medicine and pre-employment screening to assess cardiovascular fitness.
The test involves stepping on and off a step at increasing rates across up to five stages, with heart rate recorded at the end of each stage. The results are used to predict your VO2 Max using a validated linear extrapolation method. At Mayfair Health Group, the Chester Step Test forms part of our comprehensive fitness for work and sports medicine assessments.

Why Does VO2 Max Matter?
VO2 Max is considered the gold standard measure of aerobic fitness and cardiovascular health. A higher VO2 Max indicates a more efficient heart, lungs and muscles — meaning your body can sustain higher levels of physical effort for longer.
It is used in occupational health to assess fitness for physically demanding roles, in sports science to track and benchmark athletic performance, and in general health screening as a powerful predictor of long term cardiovascular health. Knowing your VO2 Max gives you a clear, objective measure of where your fitness stands today and a baseline to track improvement over time.
How to Perform the Chester Step Test
The Chester Step Test is straightforward to carry out but must be performed correctly to ensure an accurate result. Before starting, make sure you have not eaten, smoked, exercised or consumed caffeine for at least 2 hours beforehand. You should not be recovering from illness, taking beta blockers, or have undertaken heavy exercise in the last 24 hours. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and appropriate footwear.
What You Will Need
- A step or platform 30cm (approximately 12 inches) in height
- A heart rate monitor or pulse oximeter to record your heart rate accurately
- A metronome or audio track to keep the correct stepping pace at each stage
- A timer to measure each 2-minute stage
The Test Protocol
- 1Warm up briefly — spend 2 to 3 minutes walking or doing light movement to prepare your body before starting
- 2Begin Stage 1 — step up and down at a rate of 15 steps per minute (use a metronome set to 60 beats per minute, stepping on every 4th beat). Continue for 2 minutes
- 3Record your heart rate — at the end of each 2 minute stage, immediately record your heart rate in beats per minute
- 4Progress to the next stage — without resting, increase the step rate to 20 steps per minute for Stage 2, then 25 for Stage 3, 30 for Stage 4, and 35 for Stage 5, spending 2 minutes at each rate
- 5Stop when necessary — stop the test if your heart rate reaches or exceeds 80% of your maximum heart rate (calculated as 220 minus your age), if you feel dizzy, experience chest pain, or feel unable to continue safely
- 6Note which stages you completed — you need a minimum of 2 completed stages with heart rate readings to calculate your VO2 Max using the calculator below
Step Rate Guide
If you do not have a metronome, free metronome apps are available on iOS and Android, or Chester Step Test audio tracks are available online which call out the stepping pace automatically.
| Stage | Step Rate (steps/min) | Target Metronome (bpm) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 15 steps/min | 60 bpm |
| 2 | 20 steps/min | 80 bpm |
| 3 | 25 steps/min | 100 bpm |
| 4 | 30 steps/min | 120 bpm |
| 5 | 35 steps/min | 140 bpm |
